Being Prepared For Culture Shock

Living overseas is not an easy thing to do but it can be very exciting if you prepare properly. One thing to be ready for is culture shock. People in other cultures behave differently, and live in a way that can be completely unfamiliar to someone from another country. I mean besides even the obvious differences of language and time zone, so many things can be stumbling blocks to getting comfortable living within a foreign culture.

But, if you do a little research before you travel, you can ease the transition. This is especially important if you plan on staying for a while. You can start with the small things and work your way to the larger. As an example, here are three minor things that differ between Asian counties and America.

As one example of something that is not quite so obvious, the extent to which Asian people are obsessed with looks may even be greater than the American obsession. We in America have a huge hygiene and skin product industry but, we don't have anything to compare with the Aisan BB cream yet. This is a multi-function cure-all that moisturizes, treats acne and covers up blemishes among other things. Even Asian plastic surgery differs in that many Asians will try to look more American with procedures that, for example, remove excess skin around the eye. Some Asians countries also have no problem with staring and touching Western looking hair and other features.

Asian peoples in the Far East tend to skew thinner. So, if you are overweight in Japan, for instance, you better get a personal trainer. Because although in America, obesity is more and more the norm, you will really feel out of place getting stared at as the fat American amongst a populace of mostly thinner people.

Last, but not least, personal living space is a different issue altogether in many Asian nations. In rural areas, space is taken up by crops. In urban areas, it's skyscrapers, factories and other sprawl. Yes, we have these things here but we don't also have the denseness of population that makes space so valuable. Home storage solutions are very creative overseas in Asia and, if you live there, you will probably need to get accustomed to having less stuff.

I have given you some food for thought. The thing I have talked about may not be things you would have thought of and that is why I brought them up.

If you travel and plan to stay for a while in any country, especially an Asian country, you need to ready yourself for culture shock. There are many beautiful and wonderful things about Asian culture. But, they are also things that differ greatly from American and if you don't brace yourself for culture shock before you go, you won't enjoy yourself as much when you're there.
