Is there a way to reupholster over the original fabric on an antique sofa?
I was told that if I take out the original horse-hair padding or remove the original fabric, the sofa will lose value. However, I have a dog and a cat who love to sit on it when I'm not home. I can't slip cover it because it's antique and framed in wood. My husband hates the original fabric, it doesn't match anything and I don't want to ruin it. If there is a company in the St. Louis, MO area which specializes in this kind of thing or if you can recommend a way for me to do this myself, I would really appreciate it.
Yes, don't remove the horse-hair or the original fabric you can do this two different ways. The first thing is fun, go find a fabric you really love, and make sure it is upholstery fabric as fabric for sewing clothing will not last for long and show wear. I have successfully used coverlets and this can look amazing. Then you can either sew the fabric over the existing fabric OR you can create a tailored slip cover. I personally don't care for the look of slipcovers, and l love the look of a lush velvet cover that looks original.
The slip cover you can make by using newspaper and cut the sheets and tape them together to get the size and the shape and curves of the chair...if you goof up no harm! Once you get the peices figured out, then put them on the fabric and add 3" inches all around and cut accordingly. Sew it all together with large stitches and then put it over the chair with the seams out. then tailor it to fit the chair as loose or as tailored as you want, however, make sure you allow for someone to sit in it, as this requires more give at the seat area. Sew the final product and you are done.
The tailored look, fabric on fabric is a little tricker but soooo worth while.
take the fabric and loosely hand stitch it in a brightly contrasting thread to fit over the existing fabric, as close to the seams as possible. once you have the pieces in place and adjust everything, let the areas that will be stressed to have extra cm. then take a thread that is the same colour and carefully sew the pieces where they need to be. and before you know it you will have a gorgeous new looking anitque.
