History Fans Should Head For Longleat House, Wiltshire
Longleat House in North Wiltshire is an interesting historic building and home to the eccentric Lord Bath. It is not very far from Warminster and is within an hour of the city of Salisbury. There are many interesting rooms within the building and all are worth seeing.
There are seven libraries with more than 40,000 books, including a few owned by William Thynne, uncle of John Thynne who built the house. He owned the 1532 edition of Geoffrey Chaucer’s works. The Red Library, embossed with red wall coverings, contains over four and a half thousand books, mostly thanks to the 4th Marquess. The room is said to be haunted by an old man dressed in black.
The Dress Corridor is a corridor containing a display of 19th century dresses from the 4th Marchioness. You can also see coronation robes from 1902 and the1830’s wedding dress belonging to the 3rd Marchioness. Interestingly, you can also look at handpainted chocolate pots – an 18th century favourite of the lady of the house.
The Lower Dining Room is beautiful. The ceiling is by Crace in the Venetian style and the walls are adorned with ancestral paintings. Here you can see a depiction of John Thynne. The room is also notable for its ebony furniture and the porcelain dinner service.
The State Dining Room is fit for royalty and has entertained many a royal over the years, the first being Elizabeth 1 in 1574. Two more state rooms have been used for entertaining. Titian paintings can be admired on the ceiling and the walls are covered with antique Spanish leather.
The Grand Staircase is wonderful. Added in the 19th century by Wyatville it looks imposing and suitably grand. The Staircase is topped off by a wrought-iron chandelier which adds a spot of glamour. The family tree which traces the roots back to 1215 can be found at the base of the stairs.
Longleat House is an interesting place to visit in Wiltshire. The building has a long history that is reflected in the interior of the house. The house will change in years to come but if you pass by now, you won’t regret taking a look.
