Back in the first World War, the "War to End All Wars", once pristine fields of beautiful flowers were sown with the bodies of our dead countrymen. A visit to these "killing fields" today would not indicate the severity of the tools and methods used to cause such destruction. One brilliant way devised to blister the inner tissue of the human lung was by the production of Phosgene Gas. Oh, by the way, did I mention the ease with which to generate this harmful gas was simply by mixing Chlorine Bleach and Ammonia.

Over the course of the last 150 years, the cleaning of our bathrooms and kitchens has been assured with these products. Whom amongst has not been tasked to "Clean the toilet before your father comes home, Junior!!"? Hundreds have been recorded to receive medical attention, in our country alone, after inhalation of this poison gas. Nice to know one doesn't have to travel to the Dow Chemical plant to have a sniff!

Look under your sink, do you have Peroxide based chemicals? And, are they adjacent to anything organic? Like wood, paper, anything with a Carbon-Hydrogen molecular based structure? Peroxide based chemicals make excellent cleaners, because they react with organics. That means that Peroxides can kill bacteria and that is a good thing! Unless you have a reaction and resultant conflagration. I think I would rather have the bacteria and a home to live in.

Another 'cleaner' type product is a flammable based product such as an Alcohol cleaner. Next time you wash your hands, you may want to snuff out the cigarette first! Or leave the toast in the toaster for a minute more. These type of products are effective as well with proper knowledge and control of the liquid product as well as the explosive vapors that are immediately available in the vicinity. Be sure to have proper ventilation, certainly any 'flammable' odor is something to be wary of.

Have you ever dropped coffee on the tile floor and upon cleaning it, noticed a semi-bleached look to the floor? Scientists use what is known as a "Ph" scale to define the level of acidity and alkalinity of a product. Items that have a low Ph of 1 are extremely acidic, like Hydrochloric or Sulfuric Acid. Common water, H2O, is neutral and has a standard Ph of 7. Liquids that are alkaline, such as your bathroom soap, are measure on the Ph scale from 7-14. Doesn't take a rocket scientist (or maybe it does) to understand why a liquid that is Corrosive can also kill bacteria! If you don't believe me, simply think about our Colonial ancestors that spent their days mixing and boiling off the fat of farm animals to create Lye, and ultimately, the soap they used to wash and cleanse. Little did they know that their knowledge would become the basis for "Easy Off" oven cleaner!

One of the last major Killing products we use in our home and workplace is a toxic based chemical. Toxic chemicals could arguably be the worst method of ridding our sinks, toilets, and hands of nasty stuff. Worst because most toxic chemicals are the by-product, or end result, of a 'Dr. Frankenstein' mixing synthetic molecular structures together in an intensive and laborious process. The longer the process, the more complex the synthetic compound. These complex structures are usually developed for a specific purpose, unfortunate for wasps, ants, and the fruit fly. The day we believe a scientist in a lab can develop a toxic chemical that can differentiate between a spider and a butterfly, is the day we can believe the government is 'here to help'!

Other items such as Propane gas tanks and stoves, refrigerant, asbestos, and lead have their share of human tragedies attached through ignorance and improper handling. While adults should be aware and responsible of the everyday dependence upon these items, the children are basically helpless to know the dangers at hand.

Hazardous materials training and education toward these hazards would help to minimize both acute and chronic health effect upon our children. Also, moving forward, our youngsters learn the value and importance of chemicals in our environment. They can be tuned in to proper management and development of these necessary products in our country and around the world. After all, the much feared DDT, while banned in the United States, is also believed to have saved over 5 million lives worldwide by killing the malaria carrying mosquito. The trade off of human life to chemical dependence is complex, but without knowledge and education, informed decisions can not be responsibly made.

Once again, it seems, the answer to keeping ourselves safe, is really up to the individual. Hazardous materials training and DOT hazmat training results in personnel safety, through self education.
