How to Turn Your Play Area into a Summer Getaway for the Children

Summer months are the ideal time for family fun while the children are out of school. It can get costly taking them to amusement parks, even more so if you're short on cash. If you happen to be in a similar financial state as a large percentage of people are, you shouldn't be concerned, since there are a lot of inexpensive things you can do right at home. For kids 10 and younger, these activities are perfect. Many of these activities are concentrated around activities and learning in tandem.

Everyday Household Items Can Be Used In Your Games

Props from around the house can complement your stories. A fun activity to do at home is to play hospital. Have the children gather a stuffed animal or other toy and then use things from around your house that can be used as fake medical tools. Most houses are chock full of odd trinkets that can be made into medical instruments. You can also do another version of this game by pretending to run a television studio where the news is being reported. A stuffed animal or other toys can be used as part of the creative storylines that your child and you are describing to the pretend listeners.

Go on a Make-Believe Safari

Something really fun to do is to create the illusion of being out in the wild, such as on a safari journey. Gather some large bed linens and tie the ends into chairs, the sofa, or to anything in the room that will hold steadily. Cover the sheets so that thechildren feel like they are covered by the thick leaves of the Amazon or in the thick brush where the wild animals can't see them.If you have binoculars, give them to the kids to make it feel more real. Have your kids round up all of the stuffed creatures and animal figures they can find and set them up throughout the space, partially hidden from view, and then use the binoculars to spy on them. Ask the children to call the names of the animals as they find them and then make the sound of that animal. They always have a blast with this game!

Get Outside and Have Fun

Another inexpensive, yet really active thing to do is to get out side for a ride on Schwinn bikes. If you have younger children, you can tote them along in a trailer attachment where they can be seated in a secured cart. For shorter distances, some younger ones might want to use their Razor scooter to get around. To make it even more interesting, take your time and call out different items for them to spot while you're out, like a treasure hunt. Things like lizards, airplanes, or dragonflies can all be great things for everyone to call out as they spot them. This game also works beautifully on a hike and can help kids learn about nature and their environment.

Extend the Fun into the Night

As the sun sets, the fun doesn't have to be finished! If you have a tent, set it up in the yard somewhere and provide binoculars for they can observe the night skies. If you have a firebowl or a small charcoal barbeque, you can make a wood fire for them. Have the kids get together some branches that can be wooden skewers for roasting marshmallows. If you have several free days this summer, go camping at a nature preserve or forest and extend your time enjoying nature! These activities will surely give you and your kids a fun summer break full of imagination, activity, and learning.
