Think About Your Market

Remember to cater to the people in your area. If your restaurant is in a college campus or near a university, having a fine dining, formal restaurant be successful may be a challenge. After all, how many times will college boys really take a college girl out on a fancy date? In this case, a classic burger, ribs, and wings restaurant that serves cocktails and beer by the pitcher will be more of a hit with your college crowd.

Survey the Competition

Before deciding on what type of food your restaurant should serve or what style of dining your restaurant should have, be sure to survey the competition. Look at the restaurants in the area and try to be different. Fulfill a need that the people living in that area do not have easy access to. These dishes should be the dishes your restaurant is known for, and should be dishes that people will want to come back to. Many times, these dishes are comfort food dishes that are either extremely traditionally done or have a gourmet twist. Think macaroni and cheese with a drizzle of truffle oil.

Give it Personality

Some people live a good gimmick. If your restaurant has a lot of personality or character in the way it is decorated, the way the food is served, the way the menus are presented, etc. chances are that people are going to love it and love the restaurant. Just be careful when adding your personal touch. Some people won't always have your sense of fun and humor, and they may just hate the place. Keep your market in mind always.
