There are many members to the tuna family out there but the yellow fin tuna is considered as one of the largest of the group. It is a popular sport fish, as well as a staple in a lot of kitchens.
What is the Yellow Fin Tuna?
This marine animal is named as such because of its distinct bright yellow strip that runs along the dorsal fin to the anal fin. They rest of its body though is generally dark blue or green in color, almost metallic in nature. The belly though is silvery white in color. They are usually found worldwide in the warm waters of the open seas or oceans and not generally near land. They may go closer inland at certain conditions such as an abundance of their food supply and warmer waters. They prefer the warmer waters close to the surface of the seas and oceans (epipelagic layer) but have been observed to be able to dive deeper into the water for short periods of time only.
It is more popularly know by its Hawaiian name of ahi. So instead of looking for yellow fin tuna in the market, try looking for ahi and you might get what you're looking for.
This fish is a very popular variety on the chopping board of many restaurants since it is ideal for many preparations and cuisine. However, it is best served raw just like in the popular Japanese preparation of sashimi. It can also be served cooked by searing the outside and keeping the middle portion rare. For home meals, they would be ideal for frying, grilling and baking recipes that call for fish as the main protein.
Length and Weight
Yellow fin tuna is a favorite among fishing enthusiasts, whether angling or rod and reel fishing, mainly because of their agility and strength. These two characteristics make them a formidable and challenging catch.
It is generally accepted that this fish is considered mature once it reaches 47 inches (3.92 feet) in length. It is also recorded that they can be expected to grow as long as 94.1 inches (7.84 feet). Being one of the largest in the tuna family though, they can easily reach up to 139 kilograms in weight. However, based on the International Game Fishing Association records, the largest one caught through angler fishing weighed 176 kilograms (388 lbs). It was an amazing caught by Kurt Wiesenhutter in 1977 near the shores of San Benedicto Island in Mexico. Now for rod and reel fishing, the records stand at 181.26 kilograms (399.6 lbs) since 1993.
This versatile fish can certainly be expected to grow to a large size and hefty weight but with it comes speed and strength, making it one of the most popular and in demand fishes in the market.
