Visiting London: Three Things To Do

There is something for everyone to see and do in the capital city of England - London. More than three hundred museums and over two hundred art galleries can be found in London. There is such a huge variety of things going on here.

London's four major international airports make it very accessible to the rest of the world. London offers a variety of transportation options. Buying either a daily, weekly or monthly Travelcard for use on London's extensive public transport system is the most economical way of getting around. Buckingham Palace - Buckingham Palace is one of England’s most famous palaces and is the official home of Queen Elizabeth II. If you are visiting London in summer you can visit the State Rooms as they are open to the public then. Since it's acquisition for Queen Charlotte by King George III, the palace has a long and colourful history.

The historic house was converted into a palace by George IV. The Palace became the official residence of Queen Victoria in 1837. The Royal Family still use the State Rooms to entertain and receive guests during ceremonial occasions. The rooms are lavishly decorated and have some of the finest French and English furniture in the world. The walls are adorned with paintings by Rubens, Rembrandt, Vermeer and Poussin. It is also possible to take a tour of the 29-acre gardens, as well as visit the annual exhibitions which take place there. You have to have this on your itinerary for a London holiday.

The British Museum - The British Museum is world renowned for its collection of objects exploring the history and culture of man. Over seven million objects are housed within this impressive museum. Exhibits which range from prehistoric to modern are housed in the museum, which was founded in 1753. The Rosetta Stone, the Portland Vase and the Parthenon Sculptures are a few of the most notable items on display there.

It has a world renowned Egyptian collection of mummies and there is a special tomb like room dedicated to the life of the wealthy Egyptian, Negamun. Other dedicated areas within the museum house the Percival David Collection of Chinese Art, as well as areas for Medieval Europe, and Watches and Clocks, among other things. The glass-domed Great Court is the museum's central hub. Designed by Lord Norman Foster, it is the largest public covered square in Europe. You could spend days inside and still not see everything.

The London Eye - The modern icon that is the London Eye - also called the Millennium Wheel - is a must see when visiting London. A "flight" on the London Eye will give you a whole new perspective on this beautiful city. This famous London landmark stands beside the river at an awesome 135 metres tall. Through the glass pods you get a 360 degree vie of London. You can see for twenty-five miles in all directions on a clear day.

You will get a fantastic birds-eye-view of many of London's top attractions, including big Ben, Canary Wharf and the Houses of Parliament - even as far as Windsor castle on a clear day. Just one revolution at its slow and steady pace takes about half an hour. It is extremely popular, so expect long queues for tickets and boarding. You can save time by booking online. Depending on your needs, you can find a variety of packages on offer. It's possible to upgrade to Fast track which lets you check-in 15 minutes prior. You can also have a glass of champagne or the company of a London guide. This is the only way to get a panoramic view of this historic city.

Many people love to return to London often. You can easily get around this vast historic city by taxi cab if you have the budget!London has minicab operators which are both licensed and unlicensed. Like New York, London is know for its familiar taxi-cabs - here they are black rather than yellow and are called Hackney cabs. Unlike some "minicab" taxis, these are all licensed, and it is recommended that you use these for you own safety and security.

If public transport or taxis are not your preferred option, you can easily hire a car from any of London's airports. At both these airports you will find excellent motorist facilities including self-drive car hire or chauffeur driven vehicles for hire.

Do however make sure to ask for details as to what you should do if you experience a breakdown and at all costs make sure that cover is for a 24-hour breakdown service! You may be also be offered additional insurance products which will cost you more but give you added peace of mind, such as key or windscreen insurance. Although hiring a car is a great way to get to your hotel or Bed and Breakfast, the public transport is excellent in the United Kingdom. Rail links from London to other cities and towns around the country are frequent - including to the cosmopolitan seaside resort of Brighton which is also a popular tourist location and holiday resort.
