Once Hidden In Southern Closets, Confederate War Bonds Enjoying Collector Favor

Anyone who knows anything about history is aware that the Confederacy's money turned to dust financially speaking long before the end of the Civil War, so much so that southerners were reduced to burning it for warmth or papering their walls with it. Today, however, Confederate currency is very much collectible. Confederate bonds are even more so.

the CSA issued bonds to bring in capital for its war effort. Southerners and others lent money to the government, which in return promised to repay them, with a stated amount of interest, presumably once the war had been concluded and the CSA secure.

The end of the war, and the defeat of the Confederacy, guaranteed that the lenders never collected on what they were owed. The certificates themselves often languished for years in trunks and attics.

Today, though, those bond certificates are sought-after collector's items. And, you can turn around and sell Confederate bonds (and other paper collectibles) in the online auction market for a pretty decent return.

If you've ever seen a CSA bond certificate, you will have an idea of why people are avidly collecting them. Not least of all, they are very decorative. They're physically big--very much more impressive than a Rebel dollar bill, for instance--and ornately decorated. They look nice in a frame. Not to mention, of course, they represent a bit of a past era. Only the most affluent of collectors can afford to buy a certified genuine Civil War musket today, but Confederate bonds are still available of almost War Between the States buff.

The Confederate States issued a large number and variety of its bonds during its short existence. The bonds appeared with different face values, and varied a great deal in their appearance and even in the color of the paper they were printed on.

People who collect them are intrigued by the vignettes, or illustrations, seen on the different Confederate bond certificates. Among the ones to be mentioned are an mythological male figure propped on an elbow, with maps and a globe; a train engine with a tall ship in the background; a paddle steamer; a seaman holding a Rebel flag while resting an emblematic cotton; and the Confederacy's president Jefferson Davis esconced in a tableau of flags and cannon.

If you decide to frame one of these Confederate bond certificates and put it on display, perhaps in a study or office, you will enjoy looking at it and studying it for its arresting appearance. Like me, you will undoubtedly start picturing what it might have been like to live in that momentous age and during those particular war-torn years.

Southerners were not the only persons to buy the Confederate bonds. Some individuals across the sea in England, and also as other parts of Europe, did too. Could be they were folks whose sympathy in the American Civil War lay with the Confederacy and its cause. Or perhaps they were simply wagering on the war's final outcome.

Buying and selling Civil War bonds has become a big activity within the hobby of scripophily, which refers to collecting old financial instruments (including stock certificates, bank notes and railroad bonds, for example) for their historic and artistic value.

If you are interested in exploring this subject in more depth, you can find books, as well as lots of information on the Web pertaining to CSA bonds. You should learn a lot about their historical background and then go to coin shows where some of the dealers may have them for sale. If you're just interested in the art aspect, you can purchase one or two of the more common examples relatively cheaply. If you are interested in buying and selling for profit or as a side business, of course you will need to learn much more about these bonds, their different issues and how to grade them for condition, and be prepared for the give-and-take of negotiating with other knowledgeable dealers.
