Skinny Neckties Are In Style Again

All good things are worth repeating. That is the case with mens narrow ties. The fashion began during the first part of the 20th century and hit its highest popularity during the 1950's and 1960's, then made a stylish comeback in the 1980's. Today they are returning to fashion again with stars like Will Smith, Jeremy Piven and other celebrities opting for skinny black neckties to go with their tuxedos at the recent Acadamy Awards.

Narrow Ties of the 1920's

It is typically recognized that narrow men's neckties range in size from 1 to 3 inches across the widest section of the necktie. Both traditional neckties and flat bottom narrow ties during the first ten years of the 20th century were slender, ranging from 2 to 2 inches wide. Some ties measuring as slim as 1 inches, were even referred to popularlly at the time as string neckties. Styles didnt change the next few years due to lack of materials brought about by World War I. Narrow neckties in the area of 2 inches were worn into the late 20s, but wouldnt resurface again until the 1950s.

In the period after the war, according to Sarah Gibbings, in her fantastic volume "The Tie: Trends and Traditions", the shortages of World War II left no funds, no extra materials or manufacturing base in Europe. This drove British soldiers to look to the United States for a change, fashion to show off their upbeat postwar plans. Ex soldiers were seeking bright and exciting patterns, anything positive and free. The United States responded with a movement toward the broad, florid and brightly colored ties which went on to set the standard for the 40's and early 1950's. To display these neckties, the suit jacket lapels started to become wider and suits were buttoned lower which provided the open space for the tie.

1950's Thin Ties

The American psyche of the mid 1950's was restrained by the Korean War, Cold War and a recession. The more understated attitude was reflected in mens suits. Fashions became more conservative, with tapered pants, less wide lapels and skinnier neckties to match. Vivid and brilliant color combinations were pushed out by restrained patterns and solid colors. This hearlded the official rebirth of the quintessential thin black tie.

As popular celebrities such as Elvis started to wear thin ties, the young men copied their fashion. By the middle of the 60's ties as skinny as 1 inch were worn by most business men and young men alike.

Skinny Ties of the 1980's

Narrow ties made another appearance in the 1980's, particularly in the new wave music scene, which was a rejection of the flowery and excessive style of the 70s.

Thin Ties Are Popular Again

Narrow ties are here today. Just the other night attorney Anthony Romero, executive director of the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) made an appearance on the Colbert Report wearing a dark thin tie. During the segment, Stephen Colbert asked him to show something wrong with him. After a brief look at Colberts broad yellow foulard style necktie, Romero promptly replied, That tie is not my favorite, which predictably brought plenty of giggles at the hosts expense.

While there is certainly room for all types of ties to reflect ones personel style and comfort level, there will always be something classy about the sleek and slender vision of a well dressed man sporting a extraordinary skinny tie.
