I'm just curious. And please don't put any opinions about how it's too expensive for me. I know what I can afford. I just want honest, intelligent answers.

I plan on living in the southwest corner of Illinois, about 15 minutes away from the Missouri southeast border.

I have been a builder for many years in the Chicago area. The question you ask is an extremely tough one. Depending the the cost of the labor that will go into it, it may cost in the range of $100per s.f. and as high as $150per s.f. (High end luxury home can be $200 per s.f.)
Based on the square footage, this could run in the $450,000 to $675,000. (It could even go as high as $1,000,000 if you and the builder let it) Many many other factor go into this answer, such as what materials would you use for the exterior and the interior finish materials such as flooring and wood trim, cabinetry, tile in the bathrooms and many things like windows. A "basic" level that is built in modest homes in the Chicago area would be around $120 per s.f. and would no include the land, well, or the cost of the septic field or permits or school fees. The fees alone in some areas can be from "negligible" to astronomical! One town I built in cost over $30,000 for a home of your size. Hope this gets you started talking to a reputable builder from the area, and if you would like, I could come down and bid it and build it for you.

The best choice though would be a local builder that is not going to go away when the job is done. He will know the trades in the area and do the best with the ones he knows.

The utilities are also something you must give us more information about. Heating? Gas, Electric, Propane? Each is very different in cost. Also, I do not know your climate well, and a local utility company or propane supplier could help you with that answer better than I can. A similar size home with modest windows and "normal" insulation in Chicago could cost as much as 12,000 per year for gas and electric with gas heating and hot water. In southern Illinois it may be about half that, but lifestyle also plays a role in this. Will you have a lot of lighting and have a big family of teenagers (or in-laws) throughout the house up at all hours of the night? Or will you snuggle in with your husband on cold winter nights with one light on to read by in the comfort of your bedroom. Also, will your builder be foresighted and recommend a multi-zoned heating/AC system for you? There are many factors that tell the story of your potential costs.
