Auspicious Dates And Customs For The Chinese Wedding
Auspicious dates are selected by the family monk, fortune teller or temple official to help select the best date for important events. The Chinese calendar is often referred to when planning a wedding or conducting a business deal for the best results. The Chinese have believed for more than two centuries in relying on auspicious dates to assist them with significant events.
Ancient customs began with a wedding proposal utilizing a person as a go-between to conduct the transaction in a very controlled business-like manner. The negotiations would always be between the parents. This was done to assure ancestral lines would stay strong and to create important familial ties.
During the betrothal process details of both families were exchanged and an amount for the woman's family in goods and money would be negotiated. The intermediary would present the bride to be's family with several auspicious dates provided by the man's family to select from. Gifts such as tobacco, wine, male and female poultry and tea would be given to the woman's family from the man's family. This process could last from one to two years.
In preparation of the wedding day, the future bride would retreat and live in a separate part of the house surrounded by friends. They would sing songs mourning the woman's' impending separation from loved ones and condemning the person who was the buffer and the groom to be's family and sometimes her own parents. This often occurred in the cock's loft and is therefore referred to as coming out of the cock loft.
On the day of the wedding there is a ritual of hair dressing and the groom's capping. Red is featured in their clothing as it is a color of joy in the Chinese culture. The hair dressing consists of the woman washing her hair infused with pomelo to cleanse her of evil spirits. The capping ritual occurs after the groom dresses, puts on his red shoes and kneels at his family alter while the father places on his head a cap decorated with cypress leaves.
On the day of the wedding with most of the rituals behind them the newlyweds experience a simple ceremony at their family alter. They pay respects to the earth, Heaven and family ancestors. The groom's parents are offered tea. The newlywed couple share wine from one goblet.
After the wedding the couple retreats to the nuptial chamber. They are seated and are offered wine and honey. They drink from goblets tied together with red string. The after wedding feasts can last for days as the families celebrate the joining of the couple with their friends and family.
