Understanding The Inner Workings Of The I Ching

The I Ching is considered to be one of the most well known forms of inspirational and uplifting documents ever written. As an ancient Chinese text, it is regarded as one of the five Confucian classics, and with that connotation receives many praises. During its earlier years, students of Confucian mysticism used it as a reference for their studies, as well as recognized scholars looking to receive more insight from its text.

The first I Ching document found was a partial representation of the work on bamboo. As it was incomplete, the true meaning could not be fully represented through this finding alone. Instead of simple stanzas, there are sixty-four sets containing six lines known as hexagrams. The six lines within a hexagram are attributed to the "Yin" or "Yang" aspect of Chinese symbolism, which is shown in what is written.

In Chinese mythology and symbolism, Yin and Yang are opposites, much like male and female or black and white, which are used to distinguish them. Yin is known to be the "receptive" and feminine part of the symbol. Yang is the masculine and "creative" aspect. Both of these opposites are used to show the need for balance in everyday life, not one simple "good" or "evil" as is often believed in western cultures where the Yin Yang symbol is recognized.

The document has long been seen as an exemplary philosophical work. Readers have resonated with its messages of hope and inspiration, as well as taken heed of its warnings and cautionary morals. The effect of the work on individuals is profound in contemporary society, as many seek to reaffirm themselves with their natural state of mind, and regain an ultimate balance.
