Understanding Chinese Calendars

A lot of people are aware of Chinese calendars. However, they do not necessarily understand exactly how they work. In truth, they are very similar to the Gregorian calendar used by the Western world. However, there are many differences as well. For instance, the Chinese calendar is the world's oldest chronological record of time. Emperor Huang Ti was responsible for its inception in 2600 BC. This is the point at which he introduced the Chinese zodiac and its cycle. That and the cycles of the moon are among the aspects around which this calendar is based.

The Gregorian calendar measures time by months. The Chinese calendar does as well, but in different ways. Moreover, it is more concerned with the passage of years. This calendar runs in cycles of twelve year periods. Each of those years is represented by a particular animal. Buddha named those animals as a reward for their coming to say good bye to him when he left the earth.

As you can clearly see, there is a strong link between the Animal zodiac and the calendar. Not only do the animals factor into the naming of the years, but they are also important to the people who were born in one of their years. The Chinese believe that the animal under which you were born is very important. Each animal lends certain personality traits and influences.

A large part of the world's population is Chinese. Clearly, a lot of people thus also follow the Chinese calendar. It is mainly used to determine when that culture's celebrations, festivals, holidays, and special occasions occur. For everything else, the Chinese people actually follow the Gregorian calendar.

The zodiac is not the only thing which governs this calendar. Certain aspects of astronomy also play a part in it. Notably, the phases of the moon and the sun's longitude play a huge role in determining the Lunar calendar. As you might imagine, the system has thus been greatly influenced by certain aspects of science.

Many people know that whenever a brand new moon starts, it usually means the start of a new month, but many of the Western states do not follow this, rather they go by numbers. The Lunar calendar on the other hand was designed around the cycles of the moon and the longitude of the sun.

Most people recognize this calendar because of the zodiac animals used. Those children who are born in 2009 will belong to the Ox. Those who were born in 1988 - twelve years ago - were also born under the sign of the Ox.
