What are the knife laws of California/Los Angelis?

Ok I am 13 and I have a small, 3" "pocket knife". its not really a pocket knife though its from Costa Rica and it has a sheath with little clay monkeys on it.

I like knives and guns and stuff (im a girl so this is kinda bizarre)

anyway i want too know if this knife is legal in California/Los Angelis, I carry it around in my bag and stuff for self defense and i am saving money for more knives.

i take martial arts classes and am trained to use many of hte knives i am interested in buying like kunai knives (look them up on google images)

It is sharpened and can cut skin but wont do much damage unless alot of force is applied
(i know the skin thing because i was being stupid and dropped it on my toe, it didnt hurt but it cut skin and bled)

please help me cuz i dont want to get arrested for "concealed weapon"

Assuming that this is a fixed blade knife (which is what it sounds like) it is a dirk or dagger under state law. It is illegal to carry one concealed on your person. Having it in a bag you are carrying might be sufficient to qualify as on your person (it would be if it was a firearm, but I have seen no discussion of knives). State law makes it lawful to carry the knife openly or in a belt sheath (which itself cannot be in any way concealed).

Los Angeles Municipal Code makes it illegal to openly carry any dirk or dagger 3" or more in length. I think this law is unenforceable, and I have not heard of any recent attempts to enforce it. While you sure don't want to be the one to test the law, as you can see there is no way you can lawfully carry that knife without breaking one law or the other.

Sorry I cannot give you better guidance, but the law is simply not clear in California on this question at present.

BTW, it is not a good thing to tell officers that you have a knife "for protection," since that shows your intent to use it as a weapon, rather than as some other tool (e.g., a screwdriver or letter opener).
