How to Fill Holes in Wood as You Prep to Paint and Finish by Sanding
It would be nice if a wooden house did not require much more than basic home maintenance. Only scrape and caulk a bit, lay down some sheeting for paint drips, and apply a few coats of high quality exterior paint.
Maintaining your house is more difficult. For a wide variety of reasons, one almost always has to repair the wooden facings of the house.
My property required a lot more be done. The galvanized sheet metal edging near the roof gutters leaked and allowed rainwater to soak the wood behind the eve. As the house aged, the wood shrunk and the protective coat of paint flaked.
I was determined to fix this myself. It did not seem like wood putty would last.
My next door neighbor patched his wood facing boards frequently in an endless battle rot from termites. Sam’s repairs looked good years later. He knew something I did not.
Fill in Wood Holes with Bondo then Use Power Sanders to Sand

I had used Bondo on a car repair. It did not shrink. Bondo could be planed. When he mentioned using Bondo, I instantly knew that it would do the job.
With auto filler, the approach is to make repairs in layers with a lot applied first and thinner sections to finish. Furthermore, you can make nice sharp corners, with ordinary kitchen wax paper and wood to shape. To sand before priming and painting purchase one of the best discount power sanders to make the Bondo blend smoothly with the wood.
Homeowners with an old wood deck, you could also apply Bondo to repair cracks in the flooring of wood decks of various types. It comes in handy, when you are preping a redwood deck for painting.
Note the fact that Bondo looks light red after sanding and this will be obvious, when you apply a non-hiding water treatment on your wood deck. If you intend to waterproof your wood deck repaired with Bondo, you might need to use a dark stain.
Also you don’t have to look for an auto parts store to get Bondo. It is easy to find Bondo at Home Depot or Lowes. You probably would also like to know that my painting prep job shows no signs of deterioration after many years.
