my rabbit jumped out of my arms onto the floor, and is now dragging its both hind feet - is this the end ?
my poor rabbit jumped out my arms this afternoon, when I was transferring her from the outside hutch to the indoor cage this afternoon.
Now to my horror, she is only walking with her 2 front paws, and her 2 hind feet are dragging behind her ?
I am certainly taking her to the vet tomorrow, but do you think she will recommend to put my lovely rabbit down ? Is there no alternative ?
She has most likely severed her spine with the fall. It will not heal so that she can function normally again. Even though she is not showing signs of pain she most likely is feeling pain. Prey animals, which rabbits are do not show signs of weakness or illness as a defense mechanism.
A rabbit who is paralyzed will not lead a normal life. She will always just drag herself around. Even with a wheelchair they cannot live it it 24 hours a day. And they can't pass urine a feces on their own, this will have to be done by you manually at least 5-6 times day.
The best thing for your pet is to be humanely euthanized. I am sorry to tell you that but please be fair to your pet, and think about her quality of life not what is best for you.
For now until you can get to the vet, keep her warm and in a safe place, like her cage. Give her a towel or cloth to lay on. Check to make sure she is not laying in her own waste at anytime.
