Giorgione was an inspirational Italian painter from the 15th and 16th century who helped shape the development of the Venetian School of artists, having lived in the city for most of his short life. The artist was very much part of the Italian High Renaissance, which itself is amongst the most respected and studied art movements in European history. Renaissance painters like Da Vinci and Michelangelo are huge names within art, but not so Giorgione who is not seen in the same light by the art mainstream, despite leaving such a strong influence himself.

Giorgione had a lengthy list of successful paintings and his most notable works included The Tempest, Sleeping Venus, Castelfranco Madonna and The Three Philosophers. Most of his original paintings remain on show in his native Italy, within Venice, Florence and Rome. There are also others spread around the rest of Europe, such as in the Louvre, Paris and various museums in Austria, Russia and Germany.

Giorgione left his small town of birth and traveled to Venice at a young age in order to seek teachings in art to make the most of the potential which he strongly felt he had. Giovanni Bellini was the famous name responsible for tutoring a young Giorgione and he himself was in the middle of an inspired career which left it's own legacy. His young student developed his own style very quickly and became best known for a bright and bold use of colour which made his paintings clearly stand out from the sterile works which others were producing around that time. Giorgione also commonly covered landscape paintings in a way which was unusual for the time, and this has since been compared to the Romanticist artists who followed many centuries later, such as British artists Thomas Gainsborough, John Constable and JMW Turner.

The original paintings of Giorgione are now exceptionally popular with Italian and European art fans, with reproductions common in forms like stretched canvas art prints, posters and giclees.

In conclusion, Giorgione is a name which is not as well known around Europe as his fellow Renaissance members but still did produce a notable and influential career which is well worthy of study. Giorgione brought considerable skill to the 15th and 16th century art scene and helped to establish Venice as a major force within Italian art at a time when there was a huge level of competitiveness between the different provinces.
