Oriental rugs add a touch of elegance to your home. This type of area rug can be found in a variety of sizes and colors to fit any room. They work great as throw rugs or as a focal element.

However, the plush pile of an oriental area rug can become dirty. As these rugs are expensive you will want to protect their quality by keeping them as clean as possible. Some owners choose to hang their rugs so that no one ever walks on them. Others place oriental rugs on their floors where they will have to be cleaned frequently.

There is a simple test to determine if your oriental rug is dirty. Place your hand on top of the rug and push down firmly into the pile. Rub your hand back and forth for 10 seconds. If your hand has dirt on it when removed it is time to clean your rug.

The first step to properly cleaning an oriental area rug is vacuuming. You will want to vacuum the rug in its original location before moving on to other cleaning steps. Many times, a simple vacuuming is all you will need. Your oriental rug should be vacuumed every time you vacuum your carpets, at least once or twice a week.

After you have vacuumed your area rug it is time to beat the rug. Beating will remove ground in loose dirt that the vacuum cleaner missed. Hang your rug outdoors in an open area. Using a rug beater, beat the rug until no more dust or debris appears. You may want to wear a disposable mask during this part of the cleaning routine.

After beating you will move your rug to a flat area and begin washing. Make sure the area you are using is clean. Experts suggest using a driveway, a garage floor, or a deck for this step.

To begin the washing process you will first wet the rug with cool water. Test a small area of the rug to determine if it is colorfast by applying a small dab of your rug shampoo. Let the shampoo set for 10 minutes to make sure the shampoo is safe for cleaning your oriental rug.

Using a bristled brush you will spread the shampoo on the damp rug and scrub to remove stains and other debris. Wash the entire rug using this brush and your rug shampoo. When you are brushing make sure to do so with the grain of the Oriental's pile. This will allow you to get all of the dirt out of the rug. Also, make sure you clean down to the nap of the rug.

Oriental area rugs usually have fringed edges. To clean the fringe you will wet it with soapy water and brush the fringe. As you are brushing debris will be loosened and the fringe will be cleaned. Make sure to brush the fringe away from the rug so you do not get more dirt on the rug.

After cleaning you will want to rinse your rug with cool water. Remove the excess water with a squeegee and hang to dry.
