When God took a rib from Adam to create Eve, I am sure it was not meant for the female gender to be subservient to the male, or be considered a non- entity. His own son, Jesus, was conceived by a woman and born from a woman, and so is all of humanity. Throughout the ages, to this day in the 21st century, His mother Mary, occupies a venerable place in the hearts and minds of many Christian members of society.

It is historical that women had to struggle for recognition of their equal rights with men.They had to fight to be considered citizens alongside their male counterparts. Even behind closed doors, in some societies, women have to prove to be more than a sex object, that they have feelings, possess intellectual capabilities and most importantly, emotional and spiritual strength. However, these qualities have not stopped violence against women to this day.

Many women who claimed their rightful place beside man will forever remain nameless and forgotten. Their contribution, their courage is forever lost in the mists of time. Today's woman can take pride in the efforts of many women from the beginning of time who did not remain subjugated to their male counterparts. These women laid down the foundation for recognition of a woman's place in society, no matter what era, no matter how insignificant their deeds may have been. To keep a family together, to exercise the important maternal instinct, women were responsible for maintaining societal structure. This is no trivial matter.

In modern times, many women still suffer the discrimination of being inferior to men. It can be traced back to history of a male-dominated society, the predominant misogyny of Christian scholars and theologians. This was a time in the dark and middle ages where the popular literary subject was on theology, philosophy and the royal courts. The accomplishments of many women were ignored.

Today, these men are referred to as chauvinists. This attitude remains as a thorn on the feminine side. Proudly, this did not stop women from expressing who and what they are since the beginning of time. History proves that many women dared to prove they are not inferior to man.

Into the late 20th century, more women are recognized for their important contribution in politics, the corporate world, in science, medicine, education and technology in the world stage, even into space exploration. With the advances in technology, information flows to millions around the world at the click of a mouse.

In current history, female advocates for recognition and equal rights of women take pride in the high profiled women- political leaders like Indira Gandhi, Golda Meier, Margaret Thatcher and Hilary Clinton to name a few. Civil rights activist like Susan B. Anthony left a legacy, Rosa Parks successfully broke racial barrier, thanks to Hollywood for this. In the entertainment arena, Marian Anderson, an African American, was propelled into the world of entertainment mainly due to the support of FDR and particularly his wife, Eleanor Roosevelt, another woman in the world stage. Marian did not disappoint a crowd of approximately 75,000 at the Lincoln Memorial.

In science, health and technology, who has not heard of Madame Curie; what about Florence Nightingale? Didn't Amelia Erhart win such accolades for her conquest in the field of aviation? And we must not forget Mother Teresa and her miraculous work in India!

In the World wars, 1 &2, there are many nameless women who fought too. Their roles were controversial and even unacknowledged by the countries they fought for. Tokyo Rose was heard in the airwaves during World War II.

In her book, Women in War, Shelley Saywell offers rightful and meaningful tribute to the many forgotten women veterans of World War 11. Their sacrifice is not forgotten. Her book tells the story of women pilots from Britain, resistance fighters in France, Italy and Poland. Also about the Russian marines, Israeli commandos, French and American nurses in Vietnam, guerillas in Salvador, and the only woman to join the British troops in the Falklands.

These are women of the 20th century.

In the biblical times to the Ministry of Jesus, rolling on to the Dark and Middle Ages, there are notable women who were not hindered by their sex to take an active role in society. There were those who ruled alongside their husbands, some went to war, some showed talent in art and literature.

It is interesting that in the Medieval times, women realized the importance of being literate, that knowledge was power. This gave rise to women who joined the monastery, eventually, some founded their own abbeys. Opting for a monastic life was a choice for many women - this gave them freedom from living in the shadows of their husbands and the drudgery of marriage. It offered them a chance to explore their talents and got educated and most importantly, to be who they are. There was no printing press at that time, many nuns undertook the laborious writing or copying of the hand-written material that covered history or literature- a broad subject at that time.

Some recognizable names today are Queen Elizabeth I of England, responsible for Columbus' exploration and others. Queen Isabella of Spain ruled alongside the King. Eleanor of Aquitane is another one. There were saints and mystics among these women as well. To name a few- Teresa of Avila, Joan of Arc, St. Catherine of Sienna, Hildegard of Bingen.

With the advent of technology, there are reliable sources on the internet, as well as books that make this subject a very interesting read. It is not the intention of this article to cover such a vast and broad topic- an endeavour that could fill many pages of a book and not cover it all.
