Why doesn't my dog eat food directly out of his bowl?
Why does my dog take a piece of food out of his bowl then take it a few feet away from the bowl to eat it? Also, he seems to only do this when he knows people are watching, but it's not like he's hiding the food or anything he's just eating it in plain sight, just not out of the bowl.
Actually about every dog I have owned or seen come into my work (worked in a vet clinic) all did this same thing. It is just a normal thing that most dogs will do either all or most their lives or atleast at some point will do. There can be alot of different reasons personally and there is still varying points of view on the reason behind it even in the animal medical field. But the most common reasons I have found for it is natural behavior (animals were not meant to eat out of a bowl or in a specific spot all the time) but more commonly it seems fro personal experience and from listening to other owners stories is if they are bringing it near you when they eat it may just be loneliness. I mean who wants to eat alone, I'm sure most people would agree on that subject. My two little dogs will go all the way across the house into another room, get a mouth full of food, bring it to the living room where we all are, drop it and eat it and continue to do so until they are full. They won't however do this if they are both eating out the bowl at the same time. I think they do it because they are lonely a bit and want to basically eat with you (or atleast near you). I have since moved their bowls closer and they do not do it as often.
