One of the more recent additions to the places to visit in Singapore would be the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum. Situated at 288 South Bridge Road, it is within the Chinatown vicinity. It was founded in 2002 by Venerable Shi Fazhao and is dedicated to the Maitreya Buddha, which means The Compassionate One. The Buddha is also called The Future Buddha by some.
The building is predominantly red in colour and stands out for its beautiful Tang Dynasty style architecture. It was conceptualized and designed by the founder together with a team of local and overseas consultants and a great deal of research has been made to ensure accuracy and authenticity.
There are several parts to the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum, including the One Hundred Dragons Hall. This main hall is solemn and dignified with fifteen feet Maitreya Buddha, who is accompanied by one hundred Buddha and one hundred dragons enshrined on the sides of the hall.
At the Avalokitesvara Hall, you will find a beautifully handcrafted Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara that sites upon an elaborate lotus throne and along the sides you will find the Zodiac Protectors. The Buddhist Culture Museum hosts an impressive collection of Buddhist artifacts that embraces all the three branches of Buddhism and the story of Buddha's life.
One of the main highlights of the temple and museum would be the Sacred Buddha Tooth Relic Chamber. The chamber is enhanced with a gigantic hand-painting of Buddha Mandala above the golden stupa.
On the mezzaine floor you will be greeted by the compassionate Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara sitting in the middle of the Dharma Hall. At the proposed Eminent Sangha Wax Museum, you can see exhibits of wax figurines featuring local and foreign monks of eminence. This museum hopes to inspire future generations with their compassion and commitment to their countries. At the end of the the floor, you will notice a quiet chamber with the benevolent and compassionate Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha surrounded by a number of ancestral tablets.
At the second floor is the Manjushri Hall, Aranya Gallery where you can find an exhibition hall with religious art exhibitions which are held there on a regular basis. The Maha-pranjna-paramita Sutra is also housed on the same floor at the Depository of Buddhist Texts. You can also find the Lotus Heart Teahouse where you can enjoy tea and vegetarian food.
Samantabhadra Hall, Nagapuspa Buddhist Culture Museum on the third level of the building houses an extensive collection of Buddhist artifacts that encompasses and embraces the three branches of Buddhism. On the same floor is the Museum of Buddhist Cultural Relics that houses the sariras of Buddha, His Disciples and eminent monks from various countries, for faithful believers to look at with reverence.
On the forth storey, you will find the Sacred Light Hall, Sacred Buddha Tooth Relic Chamber where you will enter a serene and quiet chamber, where many devotees prostrate themselves to venerate the Sacred Buddha Tooth. The gold Sacred Buddha's Tooth Relic Stupa is the center of focus in this magnificent room.
Before you head down to the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum, it is important that you should be wearing appropriate attire to show respect. You should not be wearing bare backs, off-shoulders, shorts, mini-skirts and so on. You should also note that alcohol, pets and non-vegetarian food is strictly prohibited at the temple.
