Why did our mascot have to go...?

I live in a town that is VERY multicultural, we have brits, pakistanis, bangladeshi's, eastern europeans.
First of all i am NOT racist. I have many friends from work who are from different backgrounds and they are great. However.. our town had a mascot, it was an owl, for decades the owl was on bollards and plaques all around town.
A while ago the council announced that the owl symbol would be removed from every public place as it was 'offensive' to certain cultures.
Now don't get me wrong, i believe we should all live harmoniously together and be able to display our cultures in whatever way we see fit.
but why did we lose our mascot?
is this the council being far too PC or what? is the government creating more tension than there was to begin with?

P.S - my friends did not agree with the removal of the mascot!!

This is the problem with local councils and government today. Far too often I see and hear people complaining that the 'ethnics & immigrants' are far too sensitive and so on and so on. What these people don't realise it that the councils ect do not speak for us. They assume that is how people feel and are scared to cause some rediculous imaginary offence, so they remove and ban everything. I say how dare these people speak for me, how dare they portray me as some whining oversensitive, minority that needs my hand held. I totally agree that the powers that be are creating more tension, but for those that think the 'ethnics' are responsible, remember how impotent you feel and believe that we are in the same position too. Remember that there are people who have created a highly lucrative industry on the back of so called minority sensitivites, it suits they're pocket to perpetuate this industry, and also if you noticed these people are almost always white and middle class liberals, who probably have very few black friends and probably live in a predominantly white area. Not the kind of person I want speaking for me.
