Visiting Paris - Five Things You Must See
Paris is a magical and romantic city that has a long history and is rich in arts and culture. Whether you are on a short break or a longer holiday, there is just so much in Paris to see and do. You can reach Paris quickly and easily from London - by ferry, chunnel or air. Through the modern glass walls of Paris Charles de Gaulle airport you can get an almost 360-degree view of the planes coming and going! It is Europe’s second busiest passenger airport. The airport is so huge that shuttles are needed to ferry passengers between the three massive terminals.
Getting into the city of Paris is easy, with one of Europe’s most modern high speed trains, luxury limousines and a vast array of taxis all available from the airport. The huge international airport is a mere fourteen miles from the centre of Paris, Brussels is just one hour away, and Disneyland is only ten minutes transfer by train - making Paris a highly popular European weekend break destination. You can choose from many transport options to get you around the city of Paris. You can use buses, the Metro, and trams. Taxis and private car hire services are also plentiful.
If you do prefer to hire a car when on holiday, a brief word of warning is necessary before you begin your explorations. Always make sure to read the rental agreement fully so that you know exactly what you will be covered for in the event of an accident, this includes any excess charges which you may be liable for. Most specialist insurance products such as gap insurance, car warranties and breakdown insurance should already be taken care of by the hire car company so you won’t need to worry about those things. Make yourself aware of the procedure following a breakdown, and make sure that the breakdown insurance provided gives you 24-hour protection. You may be offered additional insurance products which will cost you more but give you added peace of mind. Be sure that you are fully aware of what you are signing, especially as you are in a foreign country.
Take special care of your personal belongings whilst travelling around this bustling city, as complacency could easily lead to a misadventure just as in any other big city. If you use basic common sense and remember not to carry all you cash or valuables around with you, then you can avoid any stress through lost belongings. Along with your passports and travel insurance documents, leave any valuables securely locked away at your hotel. Now you have covered the basics, you are ready to explore. There are too many wonderful things in Paris to list; below are a handful of things a visitor to Paris should try to see.
Eiffel Tower- The Eiffel Tower is one of the most recognised monuments in the world. It's impossible to even compare an image to the experience of seeing it in person, however. The architecture and its sheer size will amaze you. An elevator ride to the top will give you the view of a lifetime. The first floor has displays depicting the history of the tower. You can dine at the Altitude 95 restaurant on the first floor. If you are looking for a more upscale dining experience then visit the Michelin-starred Jules Verne restaurant on the second floor. The Eiffel Tower is a must see when in Paris.
Centre Pompidou- If you love modern art and architecture you have to visit the Centre Pompidou. This is not just a modern art museum. It is a place dedicated to the display and exploration of modern art and contemporary conceptualisations. You can find exhibitions, displays and celebrations of all art forms including theatre, music, film and literature. It was President Georges Pompidou who decided the construction of this hi-tech complex. He envisioned a cultural centre focused entirely on contemporary creations. Designed by Renzo Piano, this building is a distinctive architectural landmark in itself.
Exhibits at the Pompidou are always changing so you get a new experience each time you visit. The three bookshops have collections on any form of art imaginable. The design boutique sells souvenirs, gifts and other fun and funky items. At Georges, up on level six, you can dine whilst enjoying panoramic views of the city. There is also a lot to see once you leave the museum. Just outsideof the building you will find street art and sculptures. This place is truly a memorable experience.
Louvre Museum- The Louvre Museum is probably the world’s most famous art museum. This is where the "Mona Lisa" by da Vinci is kept. This, Europe's oldest museum, was founded over two centuries ago in 1793. The museum has a vast and diverse range of exhibits from Egyptian artifacts to Islamic Art.
This fascinating place would take you weeks to explore as a whole. It is in fact inside the Louvre Palace, which was once the seat of the French monarchy. There are eight thematic departments with over 35,000 pieces of art work. Among many more, you can see works of art by da Vinci and Rubens in the permanent collections. They also have temporary exhibits that highlight particular movements or artists.
Arc de Triomphe- A climb to the top of the Arc de Triomphe will give you an excellent view of Paris. It stands at a height of just over fifty metres! Napoleon Bonaparte was the inspiration behind this monument that gives a visitor a great scenic view. Commissioned in 1806, it was Napoleon's monument to his own military genius and to the greatness of his army. It has become a symbol representative of all things triumphant in Paris. Festivities are held, celebrations begun, and races are won here. Both the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the eternal flame are also located at this historical site, where you can pay your respects to the fallen and unidentified dead of two world wars.
You need to be fairly fit to undertake the climb to the top - it takes a bit of work. There are 280 steps that you will have to climb to reach the top, but it is well worth it for the view. A visit for the architecture alone to this famous French landmark is an absolute must when in Paris.
Musée d’Orsay- The Musée d’Orsay has one of the largest collections of sculptures, paintings, and art pieces produced between 1848 and 1914. You will find many early modern period artworks showcased at this museum. Housed within are works by Van Gogh, Degas, Ingres and Monet. Everything from neoclassicism, impressionism and art nouveau is covered in the permanent collections here. Here you can enjoy and explore the beginnings of modern art.
The city of Paris is inviting and romantic. You will be sure to find something to please you in Paris, whether that be the history, art, architecture or pure romanticism. Many visitors to Paris will want to return to once again sample its beauty and ambiance. The city and surrounding areas can easily be explored via public transport or car hire options. After one visit to Paris you may never want to leave, on account of all the amazing things this city has to offer!
