Song Xian Qiao Market- An Antique Lovers Paradise
Tucked away in China's gorgeous Sichuan province is the 'Land of Milk and Honey', as Chengdu is known due to its agricultural wealth. The city is bordered by beautiful greenery, its verdant forests a natural habitat for the giant panda. Chengdu is surrounded by mountains to the east. To the west, about an hour away, you will find the breathtaking mountain scenery of West Sichaun and the foothills of the majestic Tibetan Plateau. Chengdu is the ideal retreat from the harsh vistas of most modern cities.
While Chengdu has undergone an almost complete urban upgrade, there is still much you can find (especially in the back alleys) that is reminiscent of a latter day China, the Song Xian Qiao market being one of them. It is the second largest antique market in the country and showcases a diverse range of goods that are bound to satisfy anybody who comes looking. There are over five hundred stalls, the more reputed ones can be found in a three story building. Occupying the first two floors are authentic antique dealers and works of artists of some degree of fame. The third floor acts as a residency for artists.
Among the many things that you can find at the market are intricate jewellery, precious jade artefacts, fine calligraphy works, Buddha statues, beautiful paintings, Chinese good luck charms, wind chimes and carpets. Bargaining is a must where buyers should be wary of the shop vendors. Although, some articles on sale may not be the genuine thing, it offers an extensive range of items never seen before. That being said, the market offers a lively afternoon and the thrilling satisfaction of a good buy is well worth the haggling.
After a busy day at the market you can sample the scrumptious local cuisine before going back to your hotel for some well deserved rest. The Millennium Chengdu is a good Chengdu hotel. Conveniently located in the city's urban district, the hotel is only 20 minutes away from the airport, and boasts all the facilities you would expect of a five star hotel, delivered with the exotic touch of Sichuan Hotels to give guests the authentic Chinese experience.
