Impressive sports held in the Miao areas of China
Who are the Miao?
As an ethnic group in mountainous south and southwestern China, the Miao have a long history and fascinating culture. Their embroidery, silver jewelry, and batik art is second to none in the world. The Miao love sports, and they have various games held in their areas frequently, some of which you may have never known before.
Climbing a knife ladder
A Miao knife ladder is 12 meters high, with 72 knives as rungs. The climbers first use the knives to cut a piece of cloth or their hair to show that they are very keen.
The barefoot player then start to climb the ladder, while keeping their feet unhurt. When they climb, they will perform some acrobatic feats like flips.
Walking on the flaming iron board
To start this game, an iron board has coals burned on it for over 1 hour and can reach temperatures over 800 degrees Celsius.
The unshod Miao player then treads onto the iron boards.Some smoke is off his/her feet, but incredibly their feet don't get any hurt.
The iron boards are then put into the water, which immediately boils and a cloud of white steam rises up.
Horse fighting
Horse fights and horse races are all held on June 6 of the lunar calendar, to express the Miao wishes for a good harvest.
Lots of people, young and old, come to enjoy the thrilling horse fighting games. Girls will dress up with beautiful silver ornaments like silver bracelets, as this is also a holiday for them to have fun.
Two horses are taken into a big circus, and then the games starts. The two horses at once involves in a furious combat after they meet. They fight each other by biting and kicking ferociously. After several rounds of fighting, one horse escapes and runs, while the other chases closely behind it.
The audience around the rink yell excitedly for the horses. Finally the champ will have a red ribbon decorating his body.
Horse races
Horse races are held on steep mountain roads. While the game starts, the rider stands 5 or 6 meters away behind the horse.
Then the rider runs to mount the horse, which immediately gallops. The horse isn't saddled, and the rider sometimes has to struggle to keep his legs close to the body of the horse and keep from falling off.
It's absolutely an astonishing competition. The winner will get a prize, and may even win the love of the local girls.
