Steps For Creating A Picture Frame Display

There are lots of tips on how to install hanging hardware on your frame because that is what people always focus on when hanging their frames. However, aesthetic considerations regarding where and in what formation to hang pictures in an interior are just as important an undertaking.

There are no hard and fast rules and personal preference comes into play a lot in this arena; whether or not you like the final result is the ultimate rule of thumb to go by. Having said that, there are, however, guidelines that can be followed regarding groupings and arrangements of picture frames.

Pictures always look better when they're hung in a group instead of spaced out in a random arrangement over a large area. Unless a picture is rather large, it is usually best not to hang it alone on a wall because it could look lost. The exception to the rule is when you have a very large photograph or piece of artwork in at least an 11x14 picture frame that can handle being displayed by itself.

Be Practical

Any flat surface can easily be used to hang a picture frame, but you should be practical and make sure not to hang something somewhere where it’s likely to get knocked, like in a narrow hallway or close to the back of a chair. You may suffer breakage from a fallen frame or you’ll just go crazy constantly straightening them.

Avoid hanging pictures near areas of extreme temperatures, like above a radiator. The heat, dust and grease can permanently damage your photo and frame so it's best to avoid any heater vents or radiators when hanging your picture frames.

You should also avoid hanging your pictures in direct sunlight or opposite a window because they will definitely fade. Watercolors fade easily, so they are particularly vulnerable to damage from sunlight. If you hang your picture frames on the wall with glass, try to avoid hanging them opposite a window as the window reflection will make the picture hard to see.

Selecting the Right Wall

Use furniture as a guide to determine the outer (vertical) boundaries of your grouping. Imagine a rectangle “drawn” on the wall up from the outer edges of the piece of furniture, be it a side board, chest of drawers, or a sofa. The same thinking applies to areas above large pieces of furniture or beds.

White or plain, light-colored walls look best with strong colors and pictures displayed in simple picture frames without mats. Photographs and monochrome prints also look nice displayed on light colored walls.

For colored walls, it’s usually best to mimic the color scheme of the room in some way, like in the color of the picture mat – or you can use the mat as an effective contrast to your color scheme. If you have dark colored walls, it's best to use light colored mats and silver picture frames to help set off your framed pictures.

When it comes to walls with wall paper or busy patterns, oftentimes you have to avoid these areas otherwise the picture frame display will fight with the busy pattern of the wall and end up looking bad. The picture frame that will look the best will be heavily dependent upon the color, size and style of your wall. A mat really helps to accentuate the picture and make it easy to see.
