One of the most popular breed of dogs in recent years is the Chinese Pug. Animated movies like Pocahontas starred a Pug character and immediately children everywhere wanted a Pug for a pet. TV commercials routinely star a Pug as he or she displays delightful antics which obviously makes the commercials memorable. Even though Pugs have been in the limelight for a few years now, that doesn't mean that they haven't been a favorite breed among dog lovers for many years. In fact, this breed's ancestors are recorded as far back as 600 B.C. is one of the oldest of all the dog breeds.

Originally, Pugs were chosen by Chinese royalty to provide protection by notifying of anything unusual in the palace by yelping a few chosen, loud barks that is typical with the breed. They were also pampered beyond beyond measure and given more prominence than many humans at the time. Since that time, the breed has kept its place as one of the top breeds for dog enthusiasts who want a dog that sometimes seems almost human. Pugs make exceptionally good pets for children and easily become part of the family with very little problems.

Pugs love people and enjoy being part of a family life. They are not generally grouchy with children and if raised with children from a puppy, tend to fit right in with each child's personality. While some other small dog breeds are wiry and somewhat hyper, these dogs are calmer although they are certainly playful. They are also rather sturdy which makes them better for children who may not know when they are being too rough. In fact, many people think they actually look like a little bulldog of sorts and sometimes appear to be very tough looking.

This breed is easily trained and seems to understand what is being said at times. A common characteristic is for a Pug to tilt his or her head when attempting to understand a conversation. They can be taught fun tricks as well as good habits with general training. The breed is considered a miniature class of dog although the top weight size for adult male pugs can be upwards of 22 lbs.

General problems with the breed are relatively nonexistent except for the aging process which causes them to gain weight easily when not exercised properly. The breed can also develop hip problems so it's a good idea to have your vet keep an eye on this possible issue. If you're looking for a smaller dog for your children, you won't find a more fun, delightful and easily trained dog for a family pet than a Chinese Pug.
